What do I need to manufacture a 60 degree tapered thread on a steel bar.?

The part is used to split wood logs – like a cork screw it draws the log onto the thread. The taper opens the log as it is drawn down the thread.
I have a small Colchester lathe on which to produce this part.

You need a taper attachment on your lathe. Not all lathes are designed to have one fitted though. If it can be fitted then the cross slide is disconnected from its feed screw and connected to the taper attachment. Then as the carriage moves along the bed the cross slide is automatically moved into or away from the centre of rotation. This allows tapered threads to be created such as are used with some pipe fittings. You cannot set a compound slide to the required angle to create a tapered thread.

It is possible to create your own taper attachment but you need to have an easy way to disconnect the cross slide from its feed screw. It usually requires a lot of work.
