Restoring a desk top to its original settings, how complicated is it to do?
My desk top pc is about four years old, in great condition, I lost the discs but have them ordered, how hard will it be to start from scratch to make it run like new?
If your desktop is a branded system like from Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, etc., then surely it has a recovery partition and it displays what key (F10 or whatever it is) to press to enter the recovery mode. You can see this message for a few seconds, when the computer just starts up.
In the above case, you won’t have to worry about installing the drivers yourself, as everything gets done with the recovery. It’s an easy and a few-clicks process.
In case, your desktop is a custom-built one, you’ll need to reformat it and then install the OS of your choice. Since it’s a 4 year old, installing XP would be best. Here is a youtube video link about how to re-format and install Windows XP. You’ll need the Windows XP CD for this:

P.S.: Remember to backup and important data files, before attempting to format or re-install Windows, or a system recovery. You’d lose all data. Copy any such files and folders to another media like CD/DVD or USB / pen drives.
