Why should the distance a lathe tool projects from the tool holder be minimized?
The big enemy of any machine tool is flexibility. To minimise this you have to make all your lever arms — tool projection from toolpost, chuck projection from spindle, tailstock extension — as short as possible. This is one reason why boring is trickier than outside turning, because the boring tool has to be long enough to reach the bottom of the hole.
