How to test if a katana sword is really carbon steel?
I have a 80$ masahiro sword and I gave it to a friend who (he says) knows metals and he said its not carbon steel but an alloy of (i can’t remember) metals. How can I test the sword professionally to know if it’s real carbon steel?
You would have to find someone to do that for you. I can vouch that this is carbon steel. I own one also. They normally use 1045-1095 carbon steel. Without a professional test he should not be arguing with you.

Carbon Alloys $255 In recent years the Japanese have funded a comprehensive study of carbon materials which incorporate other elements including boron, nitrogen and fluorine, hence the title of the project “Carbon Alloys”. Coined in 1992, the phrase “Carbon Alloys” can be applied to those materials mainly composed of carbon materials in multi-component systems. The carbon atoms of each component have a physical and/or chemical interactive relationship with other atoms or compounds. The carbon atoms of the components may have different hybrid bonding orbitals to create quite different carbon components. Carbon Steel $81.25 Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel, is steel where the main alloying constituent is carbon. The AISI defines carbon steel as: Steel is considered to be carbon steel when no minimum content is specified or required for chromium, cobalt, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium or zirconium, or any other element to be added to obtain a desired alloying effect; when the specified minimum for copper does not exceed 0.40 percent; or when the maximum content specified for any of the following elements does not exceed the percentages noted: manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, copper 0.60.
