What programming tool should i use, i know this is a bit of a tough one…?

I want to create a system that does just basic stuff in my parents office and it involves storing records, changing records, modules like supplier ,client etc. but that s the first phase, i want to later make a website for them using the basic constructs of the program, because it is for a design house, their portfolio will be automated (currently its in hard copy form) then using the above system i want to change it to a proper website. I want to use php and mysql. or should i just forget it and use something like visual basic instead, because the program il make for them has nothing web enabled, that is where my second phase comes in…what do you think?

There are so many good off-the-shelf packages to run an office, complete with invoicing, inventory, check writing, etc., I would recommend against recreating the wheel. 95% of businesses out there could be run with existing, inexpensive tools.

Since your goal is to have some of the information on the web in the future, you need to decide whether the web will need real-time updates, or if it can be updated via a batch job (say overnight). If a batch job will suffice, you can use the existing export tools from these packages to export the data, load it into your database (MySQL or other), and display it to your visitors.
