Why Bhopal matters?
Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is increasingly emerging as one of the most important cities in central India. Be it the activities of the soon-to-be-legal eagles at the National Law Institute University (NLIU) or the demands of justice raised by the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the ‘city of lakes’ occupies prominent news space in all national dailies almost every second day. Bhopal news has thus emerged as the one of the most important sections for both readers and policy makers.
However, Bhopal’s development and socio-economic problems are no more simply local or national following the gas leak disaster of 1984. The Union Carbide fiasco, dubbed the world’s worst industrial catastrophe, continues to draw the attention of the world towards this city. Bhopal news is now covered not just by the Indian media but also the international press, which has of late been comparing the inequalities in the US response to the Gulf Oil spill and the Union Carbide’s easy escape from India. Even leading American dailies have not shied away from publishing reports and opinions that clearly take a ding at the double standards of the US government in dealing with both the disasters.
In an analytical piece, “Remember Bhopal”, published in The New York Times on June 16, 2010, Philip Bowring wrote, “President Obama would do well to take time out from bashing BP and reflect on the American corporate and official response to a much greater human and environmental disaster: Bhopal, India, 1984.”
Disapproving the “paltry penalty” that Union Carbide paid to hurriedly wrap up its Indian arm Bowring asked, “How many people in the West today want to compare the compensation citizens of India received for loss of life and health with the compensation that is likely to come from BP’s oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico?”
Quite clearly Bhopal news is no more meant for the local reader alone. The world is today using it to push and pressurize governments and multinational to change health, safety and environment policies. Unlike Bangalore, the city may not be a corporate hotspot but Bhopal news is something that no informed person would want to ignore anymore.
